Excel functions: simple explanations and examples
The Excel functions people need most — what each does, how to write it, an example table and common errors. Formulas for English, Turkish and Russian Excel.
Lookup
VLOOKUPDÜŞEYARA · ВПРVLOOKUP searches the first column of a table for a value and returns the value from the column you choose in the same row — for example a product's price by its code.XLOOKUPÇAPRAZARA · ПРОСМОТРXXLOOKUP finds a value in one column and returns the result from another. Unlike VLOOKUP it can look to the left, matches exactly by default and shows your own message when nothing is found.INDEX + MATCHİNDİS + KAÇINCI · ИНДЕКС + ПОИСКПОЗMATCH finds which row a value is in, and INDEX returns the value from another column in that row. Together they search in any direction and work in every Excel version.
Calculation
SUMTOPLA · СУММSUM adds the numbers in the cells you choose. It is Excel's most used function: totals of sales, costs or scores.SUMIFETOPLA · СУММЕСЛИSUMIF adds only the rows that meet a condition — for example only the Baku branch's sales.SUMIFSÇOKETOPLA · СУММЕСЛИМНSUMIFS adds the rows that meet all conditions — for example Aysel's sales in Bakı.COUNTIFEĞERSAY · СЧЁТЕСЛИCOUNTIF counts the cells that meet a condition — for example how many employees sold 100 or more.ROUNDYUVARLA · ОКРУГЛROUND rounds a number to the number of decimals you choose. Formatting only changes how it looks; ROUND changes the value itself — which matters for prices and VAT.
Conditions and errors
IFEĞER · ЕСЛИIF tests a condition and returns one value when it is true and another when it is false — for example "Plan met" when sales reach the target.IFERROR + VLOOKUPEĞERHATA + DÜŞEYARA · ЕСЛИОШИБКА + ВПРIFERROR shows the value you choose when a formula returns an error (#N/A, #DIV/0! and so on), so reports stay tidy.
